about

This track has a wonderful story behind it. When I put out the call for track 10 (Depression is...), Matt Guntrip sent me a message about the story of his sister, who was hit and killed by a car when she was only 7. The story was so powerful, I thought it deserved its own song.

Matt said he had written a song for her years ago, but it didn't have lyrics, as he couldn't find the words. It's a lovely song featuring sweet guitar and the voices of his two daughters. As he put it, he wanted to capture their voices because his mother probably missed hearing her own daughter's voice after she passed away.

Hearing this, I knew what I had to do. Normally, I work with loops and not full-fledged songs, but I really wanted to incorporate Matt's song into an Iambic Beats style piece. This was a major technical challenge for me. I have become good at putting specific puzzle pieces together but this was out of my wheelhouse. But I wanted to do this for Matt and his family. I added in some piano and other effects, along with his reading of his experience. Then, I added in not only his two daughters' voices (the spoken pieces) but also my own daughter's voice (singing along with me toward the end)!

The result, I think, is magic. The story of Matt's loss made me think differently about hearing my own daughters' voices and about life in general.

I hope you enjoy this piece because for me, it is a game changer.

lyrics

(Oh if I could go back
If I could go back
To when you were young…)

I came home from a tough school
On a spring day
Thinking life might get better
And discovered my sister’s shoe
On the roadside at the bottom of the drive
I picked it up
Walked home
Only to discover my world
Would never be the same

(I miss your small voice so much
Sometimes I think I can hear it)

We have so many titles. A few of mine are: scientist, poet, writer, singer, mom. I like to think I live at the intersection of music and words and always asking questions. A goddamn lovely place to be.
